Sebastian, can you start by sharing your background and what led you to your current role as VP of Engineering at Storyblok?

My journey in the tech industry began with a deep interest in software development and a passion for creating innovative solutions. Over the years, I have held various roles in engineering and management, which have provided me with a broad perspective on technology and its applications.

Before joining Storyblok, I worked with several startups and established companies, focusing on building scalable and secure software solutions. My experience in these diverse environments has been instrumental in shaping my approach to engineering and leadership. With Storyblok, I was drawn to the company’s vision of transforming content management and the opportunity to lead a talented team in driving this innovation forward.

In what ways can generative AI be utilized to create malicious content such as phishing emails and social engineering attacks?

Generative AI can produce highly realistic and personalized phishing emails by analyzing vast amounts of publicly available data about potential targets. This allows attackers to craft messages that are more likely to deceive recipients into divulging sensitive information. Similarly, AI can generate fake social media profiles or impersonate trusted contacts, enhancing the effectiveness of social engineering attacks. The ability to produce high-quality, contextually relevant content at scale means that these AI-generated threats can bypass many traditional security filters designed to catch generic phishing attempts.

The current cybersecurity measures seem adequate. What specific measures do you believe are most effective against AI-driven attacks?

While current cybersecurity measures provide a foundation, they need to be enhanced to effectively counter AI-driven attacks. Key measures include advanced threat detection where AI and machine learning are used to detect and respond to threats in real-time, behavioral analytics, which is the monitoring of user behavior to identify deviations that may indicate compromised accounts. Zero Trust Architecture is also important which involves implementing a model where verification is required for every access request, regardless of its origin.

Keeping staff informed about the latest threats and best practices to mitigate human error are also key measures in reducing the threat of AI-driven cyber attacks as is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) where an extra layer of security is added to verify user identities.

In your estimation, how do you anticipate advancements in GenAI will influence the landscape of video and advertising in the coming year?

GenAI is poised to dramatically transform the advertising and video industries by automating content personalization and optimization at scale. Over the next year, I anticipate these technologies will make significant strides in enhancing how content is created and delivered, making these processes more efficient and tailored to individual user preferences.

Among the developments in GenAI, which aspects are you particularly enthusiastic about, especially in relation to your responsibilities at Connatix?

The capability of GenAI to automate complex processes and personalize content at a granular level excites me the most. These advancements align perfectly with our goals at Connatix, where we aim to revolutionize how video content is served to users, ensuring it is both engaging and relevant.

Can you share your personal approach to nurturing innovation and maintaining a competitive edge in the swiftly evolving arena of technology and advertising?

When tech glitches threaten your brand perception

Hardly a week goes by without news of a ‘technical issue’ or outage. Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Tesco Bank are just some of the well-known brands that have experienced tech meltdowns in recent weeks.

We’ve come to expect IT crashes as a part of life, but if handled poorly, they can snowball into a major crisis, tarnishing a company’s reputation, eroding consumer trust and resulting in lost sales.

Here are five safeguards brand owners can put in place to protect their sites and minimise fallout from an IT crash.

Be alert

Do an audit of your site at least once a year with penetration (PEN) testing, where you look for any vulnerabilities in any of your systems. It’s not a guarantee that your site is absolutely secure and glitch-free, but as a brand, at the very least, you will have tried to identify any potential issues and protect your site and stored data.  Being proactive with system security alongside testing and QA reduces the risk of outages drastically.

Alongside PEN and code testing, you need to know when systems go down. There is nothing worse than a customer notifying you that your website or platform doesn’t work.

Setting up monitors for your systems to notify you is the first step of your action to an outage. Depending on your user, you can even make these publicly accessible, like Slack (https://slack-status.com/), and other platforms so your users are aware of this issue as it happens.     

Consider your site structure

It is possible to limit outages to specific parts of a site, but it will depend on how your website or platform is built and whether different parts of it are hosted on separate services, for example.  This approach could help contain the fallout from an outage. Take X, formerly Twitter: its likes and tweets are kept separate where microservices are used for each, so if ‘likes’ were to go down, tweets would still be visible. We would advise this type of structure for brands that would benefit from such an approach. A microservices set up would benefit anyone that’s creating a platform for users need to complete things in, such as banks, ecommerce but not needed for things like marketing websites and ‘brochure’ websites.

Post-crash follow ups

The level of testing required and the number of times this is needed will depend on the size of the company, its user base and its product.  It is also essential to take tech developments into account, all of which can impact even the most robust of sites. We recommend PEN tests once a year, but above all, be vigilant, take customers seriously and respect their data.

If you’ve suffered an outage, there’s nowhere to hide. Being proactive rather than reactive shows that you care, which can make a big difference to your reputation.
